Over Slot Draft Signings: Tyler Holt, Jordan Shipers, Yankees

We are just hours away from today's deadline to sign player selected in June's amateur draft and the rumors are starting to swirl about who will sign and for how much.  In the interim, a number of non-first round draft picks continue to sign for over market value.

As always, Jim Callis and Aaron Fitt from Baseball America leads the pack in breaking this news.

Tyler Holt Hit By Pitch

  • The Marlins signed high school shortstop/catcher JT Realmuto to a $600K signing bonus.  Realmuto was the 104th pick of the draft in the third round, a slot bonus recommendation of $309,600.
  • High school catcher Will Swanner, a 15th round pick by the Rockies, agreed to a $490K signing bonus, $340K in excess of the recommendation.
  • Jake DePew, a high school catcher and ninth round pick by the Rays, signed for $460K, $310K over the slot recommendation.
  • Jared Lakind, a high school first baseman, agreed to a $400K signing bonus with the Pirates.  A 23rd round pick, Lakind's deal was $250K over slot recommendation.
  • The Padres have signed high school outfielder Jose Dore to a $450K signing bonus, three times the slot recommendation for an eighth-round pick.

Second Round Signing Bonuses: Reggie Golden, Cody Buckel, Kellen Sweeney

Reggie Golden, Cody Buckel and Kellen Sweeney, all second round picks in the 2010 draft, recently agreed to signing bonuses reports Baseball America's Jim Callis.

  • Golden, a high school outfielder from Wetumpka HS in Alabama, signed for $720K with the Cubs, $157K over the recommended slot bonus for the 65th overall pick.
  • Buckel is a high school pitcher from Royal HS in California.  The 72nd pick of the 2010 draft by the Texas Rangers, Buckel signed for $590K, a little bit less than 85K above MLB's slot recommendation.

Cody Buckel Delivers

  • High school shortstop Kellen Sweeney agreed to a $600K signing bonus with the Toronto Blue Jays.  The 69th overall pick, Sweeney got just shy of $70K over what MLB recommends for that pick.

Draft Signings: Chris Sale, Michael Olt, Taijuan Walker

The number of signed draft picks continue to increase and we had a few more announced recently. Jim Callis from Baseball America and Michael Huang from The Sporting News provide the news about the recent signings.

Visit our Draft Pick Signing Page for a complete list of first round draft picks signing bonuses and status.

  • Chris Sale, considered one of the best college pitchers available in this year's draft, agreed to a $1.656M signing bonus with the White Sox.  Callis notes that while the signing bonus is within MLB's slot recommendation, it is far below what the normal best college pitchers receive in the draft.

Chris Sale Watches His Pitch

  • The 49th overall pick first baseman Michael Olt agreed to a $717,200 signing bonus with the Rangers.  Olt's signing bonus is similar to last year's 49th pick.
  • The Mariners signed high school pitcher Taijuan Walker to a $800K signing bonus.  The 43rd pick of the draft, Walker's signing bonus is slightly above the MLB slot recommendation, but beneath that of what the 43rd pick signed for last year.
  • Taylor Lindsay agreed to a $873,000 signing bonus with the Angels.  It was reported last week that Lindsay signed, but terms had not yet been released.

2010 MLB Mock Draft: First Round

We've presented mock drafts from a number of different writers and publishers and multiple versions of their mock drafts.  With just a few hours left before the draft, it is time for Baseball Rumor Mill's shot at a mock draft of tonight's first round.

1) Washington Nationals: Bryce Harper, College of Southern Nevada, C
Little left to say here as this pick is set in stone.

2) Pittsburgh Pirates: Jameson Taillon, The Woodlands, RHP
Multiple reports have the Pirates taking Taillon

3) Baltimore Orioles: Manny Machado, Brito HS, SS
This pick is down to Taillon or Machado, whomever Pittsburgh doesn't take

Manny Machado Finishes His Swing

4) Kansas City Royals: Chris Sale, Florida Gulf Coast, LHP
Rumors about a pre-draft deal with Yasmani Grandal are falling apart.  The Royals have been rumored to want to keep costs down anyway, so Sale makes sense.

5) Cleveland Indians: Yasmani Grandal, Miami, C
If the rumors about the Indians upping the Royals offer are true, Grandal will go here.

6) Arizona Diamondbacks: Drew Pomeranz, Ole Miss, LHP
All reports have Pomeranz going here

7) New York Mets: Zack Cox, Arkansas, 3B
His rumored salary demands could send him tumbling, but the Mets have money and the big names have all gone in front of them.

Updated Mock Drafts: AOL Fanhouse, Jonathan Mayo

A few more last minute mock drafts to pass along in the hours ticking down before tonight's draft.  Frankie Piliere from AOL Fanhouse and Jonathan Mayo from mlb.com.

So what's interesting about their versions?

  • Bryce Harper, Jameson Taillon, Manny Machado, Yasmani Grandal, Chris Sale and Drew Pomeranz go in order, #1 through #6 on both.  #1 through #3 seems fairly set in stone at this point, but Grandal to the Royals is anything but determined.  They've been rumored on Sale as well, so if they pass on Grandal, that'll affect the next 5-10 picks significantly.
  • Mayo has the Reds taking Brett Eibner at #12.  Very high for the Arkansas product who has been left out of the first round of many mock drafts.
  • Similarly, Piliere has the Reds taking OSU pitcher Alex Wimmers higher than expected at #12 too.  Wimmers has frequently been rumored to be headed to Minnesota at #21.  Mayo has Wimmers going #15 to Texas.

Alex Wimmers Rears Back

  • Another new high placement is high school pitcher Jesse Biddle going to the Brewers at #14 according to Piliere.
  • Piliere has the Red Sox taking LSU pitcher Anthony Ranaudo at #20, one of the most common rumors.  Mayo, does not, however, and goes with the second most common Red Sox rumor, Ball State 2B/OF Kolbrin Vitek.  Mayo does not have Ranaudo in the first round at all.
  • Mayo has Arkansas third baseman Zack Cox going #7 to the Mets.  Pilere, however, supports our speculation that salary demands will send his draft stock tumbling and puts him at #22 to the Rangers.
