News and Notes From Rosenthal, 3/24: White Sox, Aardsma, Pedro, Baker

Let's take a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal:

  • Although the White Sox situation at centerfielder is less than desirable, they are not interested in trading for a higher priced veteran like Juan Pierre or Gary Matthews Jr.
  • Rosenthal believes that David Aardsma will win the Mariners closer job.
  • Pedro Martinez is looking for a $5M contract and that is getting no traction with the Dodgers.
  • The Phillies, Astros and Pirates are interested in Jeff Baker.  Baker is out of options to be sent to the minors and the Rockies are looking to move the utility player.  If the Phillies can find somewhere to put or trade Geoff Jenkins or Matt Stairs they would be free to trade someone like Kyle Kendrick in exchange for Baker.
  • The Blue Jays remain interested in Chin-Lung Hu, Juan Castro and other options at shortstop as insurance.
  • Rosenthal reports that rival team executives do not like that Willy Taveras is not a good fit for the Reds.

Waiver Wire Candidates

Tracy Ringolsby provides her list of 10 players who will make it through the waiver wire. Whether it is because their skills have eroded or their contracts are too large for a team to take on, if any of these players clear waivers, the team is then free to trade them just as if it were prior to July 31st.

The players are: Rich Aurillia, Paul Byrd, Brian Giles (we now know he didn't make it through), Mike Hampton, Aubrey Huff, Juan Pierre, Edgar Renteria, Yorvitt Torrealba, Jarrod Washburn, and Randy Winn.

Ramirez Trade Resulting in Paltry Playing time for Pierre?

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that Juan Pierre isn't thrilled with moving from LF to CF, but is even more worried that his playing time will diminish if Andruw Jones starts to play well. Pierre's splits of 280/324/316 (BA/OBP/SLG) are certainly below average for a lead-off hitter, but Andruw Jones' are MUCH worse: 161/260/241.I don't think Pierre should have much to worry about.

Pierre shouldn't have too much to work about if Tony Jackson's speculation that Jones will be sent to the minors comes true.
