Jayson Stark has a new column up on espn.com with a number of good rumors in it.

• The Padres are still interested in trading Jake Peavy despite their recent success. Clearly they don't believe they can sustain it. As far as Peavy is concerned the pecking order of teams he'd accept a trade to is: Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Cardinals and Astros. Everyone is familiar with the Cubs attempts to get Peavy and word is that the Padres are reluctant to trade within their division, removing the Dodgers and giants. Peavy's friend, Roy Oswalt, has done his best to entice management to make a trade, but Peavy's hefty contract is keeping the Astros away.
• Speaking of Oswalt, a few scouts who Stark talked to said that he had "lost his edge" and could probably benefit from a change in scenery. Rumor has it that the Phillies have already inquired to Oswalt's availability.
• Philadelphia's interest/need for a pitcher is well known. Earlier in the week there were rumors that the Phillies were interested in Brad Penny of the Red Sox. Stark reports that they've also had some inquiry into the following guys: Oswalt, Peavy, Brandon Webb, Roy Halladay, Doug Davis, Erik Bedard, Cliff Lee, Aaron Harang, Penny, Chris Young and Jason Marquis.
• If and when the Phillies do acquire a pitcher, they'll likely have to give up one of the following prospects whom clubs are rumored to be interested: "Lou Marson, infielder Jason Donald and pitcher Carlos Carrasco -- plus catcher Travis D'Arnaud, shortstop Freddy Galvis, pitcher Kyle Drabek and outfielder Dominic Brown."
• The Braves want to take Mark DeRosa off the Indians hands, but seem unlikely to trade some of their young starting pitching to do so.
• Rumors about Jeff Francoeur's availability and who's interested in him are all over the map, but Stark reports that the Braves are "mostly listening" at this point.
• The Mets do not appear to interested in a quick trade to replace Carlos Delgado at first.
• Jonathan Sanchez is available from the Giants...for the right bat. They've already inquired, unsuccessfully, to obtain Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu and Carlos Lee.

Jayson Stark of espn.com presents his preview of the winter meetings in his latest article:

• There is almost no chance that the Padres are able to trade Jake Peavy at the meetings.  Their main dance partner, the Cubs, need some time to figure out their ownership situation to help determine how they can take on Peavy's contract.
• The White Sox have made Jermaine Dye available and the Braves, Reds, Royals, Rays and Mets have reportedly shown interest.  The White Sox have also put Paul Konerko and Jim Thome on the trading block as well. 
• While the Mariners are open to any trade offer for JJ Putz, considering how many closers are available either as free agents or via trade and a lack of teams needing a closer, Putz is unlikely to be traded.
• Trade rumors have surrounded Zack Grienke, David DeJesus and Mark Teahen but the Royals aren't really interested in trading any of them unless the deal was impossible to turn down.  Jose Guillen, however, is very available. 
• While many teams are interested in Jeremy Hermida, the Marlins would rather trade Jorge Cantu.
• When the Angels finally make an offer to Mark Teixeira, Stark expects that the team will include a two to three day deadline for an answer from the switch hitting slugger.
• Rafael Furcal and Casey Blake are the free agents most likely to sign this week according to Stark. 
• Stark surveyed multiple team executives and the consensus is that Manny Ramirez and Teixeira do not sign until January.

Jayson Stark of espn.com gives us a lot of hot stove updates in his most recent post:

• The Braves are now the front runner to land AJ Burnett.
• It does not seem like another team has attempted to match the Yankees $140M offer to CC Sabathia who is expected to make a decision soon, possibly next week.
• The are rumors that the White Sox are looking at Jorge Cantu.
• The Phillies have been pursuing Derek Lowe, but it doesn't seem like they have a realistic shot of having him sign.
• Rafael Furcal's suitors seemed to have reduced to the Dodgers and As with possible interest from the Orioles.
• Ty Wigginton and Adrian Beltre are the likely back up plans for the Dodgers if they are unable to retain Furcal and Casey Blake.

Way back on August 26th, Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinal wrote an article about the decisions the Marlins have to make with so many of their young players due for raises in arbitration. We covered it here, linking to Mike's insightful article to give credit.

Yesterday, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post, wrote an obviously similar article (which you can find here) a little more than a week after Berardino's article. Not only was the topic of the article almost identical, much of Capozzi's language is very similar, if not identical.

The similarities go beyond just figures. Take a look for yourself:

1. Berardino writes:

[Kevin] Gregg figures to land in the $4.5 million range, which makes him a likely trade candidate as the Marlins make room for understudy Matt Lindstrom, who won't be eligible for arbitration for at least another year.

Capozzi writes:

Gregg could be in line for about $4 million, despite his recent struggles. But the team might try to trade him, too, and give Matt Lindstrom a shot at the closer's role.

2. Berardino writes:

Lefty Scott Olsen ($2.6 million projected) could wind up making a bit more than [Ricky] Nolasco based on his durability during the two-year period that will be evaluated.

Capozzi writes:

...and Olsen, whose durability could net him $2.5 million.

3. Berardino writes:

Josh Johnson, making a successful return from Tommy John surgery, should experience a more modest pay increase, but he still should reach seven figures for the first time.

Capozzi writes:

Right-hander Josh Johnson could get $1 million through arbitration

4. Berardino writes:

Current Marlins under team control for next season include franchise shortstop Hanley Ramirez ($5.5 million); starters Andrew Miller ($1.575 million), Anibal Sanchez and Chris Volstad...Sanchez and Volstad should make close to $400,000...Olsen would be a logical trade candidate in that scenario.

Capozzi writes:

Three starting pitchers are under team control next year: left-hander Andrew Miller ($1.57 million) and right-handers Anibal Sanchez and Chris Volstad (each projected to get around $400,000)...That means Olsen could be trade bait.

5. Berardino writes:

Five Marlins can become free agents: reserve outfielder Luis Gonzalez, infielder Wes Helms, backup catcher Paul Lo Duca and lefties Arthur Rhodes and Mark Hendrickson.

Capozzi writes:

Then there are five Marlins who can become free agents: reserve outfielder Luis Gonzalez, backup catcher Paul Lo Duca, infielder Wes Helms, and lefties Arthur Rhodes and Mark Hendrickson.

6. Berardino writes:

[Mike] Jacobs, whose salary could approach $2.5 million off an overall disappointing year, is a trade candidate as the Marlins seek to improve their defense while balancing their books. Corner infielder Jorge Cantu, a second-time arbitration qualifier, is a candidate to replace Jacobs at first, but only if his salary doesn't rise too quickly off this comeback season. If Cantu moves off third, that could open the door for Triple-A third baseman Dallas McPherson, who leads the minors with 40 homers.

Capozzi writes:

The team could move Cantu to first base and give Dallas McPherson a shot at third base, making Jacobs expendable.
