Although Cal State Fullerton's Christian Colon might not be the most talented bat available in the 2010 draft, he is already very polished and plays professional quality defense.  The dearth of quality shortstops available and the increase focus by a number of teams on defense will likely make Colon an early pick and he could be on a major league team sooner than most of his peers.

At six feet tall and 180 lbs, Colon his a nice frame for a major league shortstop.  As a sophomore, Colon drilled 26 extra base hits and his percentages were an impressive 357/442/529.  Though he doesn't walk much, he doesn't strike out either. 

If that sounds like a Top 10 pick, you're not alone.  But, Colon does have a number of knocks.  One American League scout doesn't believe the hype about Colon's glove.  ""For starters, I'm not sure he's the glove he's known to be," he said "He fields everything he gets to and makes all the plays around the bag, but I think he lacks top-drawer range."

Colon is being compared with 2009 draft pick, Grant Green, another college shortstop who was limited on hype, but strong on credentials. Colon is also compared against other shortstops available in the first day of the draft including Jedd Gyorko, Rick Hague, Derek Dietrich and Josh Rutledge.  One of the reasons Colon is expected to go in the first round is because some of the aforementioned college shortstops are not projected to play the position at the major league level.

#1 Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals - After plenty of speculation that he would not sign, Strasburg inked a $15M signing bonus, the highest in MLB history.
#2 Dustin Ackley, Seattle Mariners - Signed for $7.5M. His deal was at first thought to be $9.5, but those early reports were erroneous.
#3 Donovan Tate, San Diego Padres - Instead of going back to UNC to play football, Tate signed with the Padres for $6.25M
#6 Zach Wheeler, San Francisco Giant - Signed for $3.3M.
#9 Jacob Turner, Detroit Tigers - Was looking for Rick Porcello-like money and got close to it - signed for $5.5M
#11 Tyler Matzek, Colorado Rockies - Allegedly needed to "break the bank" with his deal and signed for $3.9M
#12 Aaron Crow, Kansas City Royals - Still has not signed, but is not subject to the Aug 17th deadline.
#13 Grant Green, Oakland As - Received a $2.75M signing bonus.
#14 Matt Purke, Texas Rangers - Did not sign and will head to college.
#15 Alex White, Cleveland Indians - As expected, White signed for a bit less than Minor did: $2.25M.
#19 Shelby Miller, St. Louis Cardinals - Received a signing bonus of $2.875M
#22 Kyle Gibson, Minnesota Twins - Signed a $1.8M contract.
#29 Slade Heathcott, New York Yankees - Signed a $2.2M contract.
#30 LeVon Washington, Tampa Bay Rays - Ultimately did not sign with the Rays.

Keith Law from espn.com has an update on some of the first round draft picks who remained unsigned.

• The Royals have offered Aaron Crow $3M and indications are that he's looking for more.
• High school RHP Matt Graham from Texas, a sixth round draft pick by the Giants, signed for $500K.
• Patrick Schuster, he of the four consecutive no-hitter's fame, signed with the Diamondbacks for $450K.  He was a 13th round draft pick.
• The Red Sox 10th round pick, Brandon Jacobs, is expected to sign for $750K.  Similarly, the Sox 26th round pick, Miles Head, is expected to sign for $250K.
• Grant Green was in Oakland this week talking with officials, but no one expects him to sign before the deadline.

• The As have slated first round money ($1M-$2M) for fourth round draft pick Max Stassi, but there's still a good chance he takes his scholarship to UCLA.
• There is word in the same article that the As and Grant Green have "been in regular contact".
• The Red Sox signed 10th round draft pick Brandon Jacobs (not the football player) for $750K. The slot recommendation for a 10th round pick is about $150K.
• Fifth round draft pick Ashur Tolliver was signed by the Orioles for $200K. Randy Henry ($365K) and Ryan Berry ($417,600) also agreed to contracts with Baltimore.
• The Pirates made the 175th overall pick of the draft (sixth round) , Zack Von Rosenberg, the highest paid draftee outside of the first round paying him a $1.2M deal. The move is an indication of the Pirates new direction - focusing on amateur talent.
• A former #1 draft pick by the Pirates doesn't seem to fit into their new plan.

Earlier we posted Keith Law of espn.com's review of Day One of the 2009 MLB Draft. Let's check in on his thoughts about Day Two.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates opened eyes with their controversial pre-draft deal for Tony Sanchez and then took him with the #4 pick of the draft, well ahead of several better talents according to most evaluators. Their approach to the draft was not to spend a lot of money in Round 1, but perhaps splurge a little bit in the later rounds on some talent with higher salary demands than might be normally seen in the later rounds. The Pirates added Jordan Cooper, Zach Van Rosenberg, Colton Cain and Trent Stevenson - all players who feel because of signability concerns.

Oakland Athletics

Hopefully the As are prepared to spend some money on their amateur draft because they grabbed guys who have potential signing issues. Their second round pick was Max Stassi who fell because of the perception that he'll require over draft slot money. The grabbed Ian Krol who was booted from his high school team for some off the field issues and is committed to Arizona and will take some money to wrestle free. Last, but not least, their first round pick was Grant Green who is represented by Scott Boras.

Tampa Bay Rays

Injury questions are a theme of the Rays draft. They grabbed a potential first round pick, Luke Bailey, who fell to them because of Tommy John surgery earlier in the year. Their 10th round pick, Derek Dennis, is kind of an unknown because of how late he blossomed.

Los Angeles Angels

We'll let Keith Law handle this one perfectly "The Angels' draft was all over the place, with toolsy prep bats, big college arms with bad command and some projectable high school arms"

Atlanta Braves

For whatever reason, the Braves have seemingly changed their draft philosophy from an upside-high school based approach to a more conservative college-based one. Their first pick was Mike Minor who, while solid, doesn't project to have much upside. All in all, they didn't take a high schooler until the 10th round. Perhaps they were not interested in the financial commitment high schoolers often require.

7:03pm With the eleventh pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Colorado Rockies select Tyler Matzek.  The Royals are now on the clock.

7:05pm Most everyone had the Rockies taking Bobby Borchering here, but that was before the slight surprises we've seen earlier in the draft.  This likely means that Borchering could fall to the Diamondbacks at #16 and #17.

7:07pm Baseball Rumor Mill Best Available: Alex White, Aaron Crow, Matt Purke

7:08pm With the twelveth pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Kansas City Royals select Aaron Crow.  The As are now on the clock.

7:10pm What's most intriguing to me about this pick is that Crow couldn't reach an agreement as the 9th pick of the 2009 draft and held out for, theoretically, more money.  Is he likely to get more money now as the 12th pick of the 2009 draft?  Seems unlikely.

7:12pm With the thirteenth pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Oakland As select Grant Green.  The Rangers are now on the clock.

7:14pm I'm not a big fan of this pick.  Everything I read and heard over the past few months has not been very positive about Green, especially when it comes to his defense.

7:16pm The Rangers have been sticking to best available player for a few years now and I expect that trend to continue.  My guess is Shelby Miller.

7:17pm With the fourteenth pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Texas Rangers select Matt Purke.  The Cleveland Indians are now on the clock.

7:18pm I figured it'd be Purke or Miller and got the 50/50 guess wrong.

7:19pm Much like everyone was predicting Drew Storen to the Nationals with the 10th pick, everyone has been saying that Eric Arnett would be going to the Indians.

7:21pm With the fifteenth pick of the 2009 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians select Alex White.  The Arizona Diamondbacks are now on the clock.

7:22pm A little bit of a surprise, but only that the Indians didn't take Arnett.  White's draft stock slipped recently due to his struggles towards the end of the season, but perhaps the Indians didn't think he'd fall to them and were happy to take him.

The espn.com draft team of Keith Law and Jason Churchill have five (yes, FIVE!) draft updates for us today.  You can find each of them here, here, here, here and here.  We'll summarize them for you in one convenient location...below.

• The Pirates are interested in Tony Sanchez, Zach Wheeler, Matt Hobgood and Grant Green.
• Law likes the following: Wheeler to Baltimore, Tyler Matzek to San Francisco and Alex White to Atlanta. 
• The Braves like Matt Purke but don't want to pay him over slot.
• Atlanta's choice is between White and Mike Minor.  Churchill thinks Drew Storen is in the mix at #7 too.
• The Reds would like Minor, but if the Braves take him Chad Jenkins and Storen are options for them.
• Jenkins and Storen are also options for the Nationals at #10
• Churchill says that is Storen gets past the Nationals at #10, he might fall all the way out of the first round.  The Angels and Mariners like him, but likely do not have him high enough on their draft boards to select him in the 20s.  The Twins have some interest in Storen, but prefer Billy Bullock.
• Bobby Borchering may be the favorite to the Rockies at #11, even over Hobgood.
• If the Rockies do take Borchering at #11, the Diamondbacks will take AJ Pollock and Matt Davidson with their picks at 16 and 17.
• If Kansas City takes Mike Leake with #12 - and indications are that they are seriously considering it - Oakland would then choose between Green, Mike Trout and possibly Donovan Tate.
• Max Stassi worked out for the Red Sox this morning.
• St. Louis is rumored be interested in Purke.
• Detroit might not want to spend the money that Purke and Jacob Turner are rumored to be demanding.  If so, Rex Brothers and Chad James become options for them at #9.  The Tigers have also been linked to Borchering, Mike Trout and Reymond Fuentes.
• The Padres like Donovan Tate at #3, but if they feel they can't afford him, they'll go with Wheeler.  That would mean the Orioles take Hobgood.

Still more rumors and news floating in about what players teams are zeroing in on for tonight's draft.  Let's take a look.

• Jen Langosch of mlb.com is beginning to accept the possibility that the Pirates will take Tony Sanchez with their first pick, #4 overall.  Keith Law of espn.com believes that, beyond Sanchez, Zach Wheeler, Matt Hobgood, Grant Green and Aaron Crow all are in the mix.  Chuck Finder of The Pittsburgh Post Gazette agrees about Wheeler, Crow and Sanchez and also suggests Kyle Gibson.  There is also some great stuff about how Sanchez is ready to sign in Finder's piece.  
• Tracy Ringolsby of Inside the Rockies indicates that the Rockies are high on Matt Hobgood.
• Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic found out that the Diamondbacks really like Bobby Borchering and will take him if he's available with their picks (#16 and #17).  Mike Leake also falls into that category.  Some options for the Diamondbacks next picks (#35 and #41) include Tyler Skaggs, Jiovanni Mier, Brett Jackson and Tommy Mendonca.  
• Rangers president Nolan Ryan believes they will take a pitcher with their pick, #14.  Names under consideration are Shelby Miller and Matt Purke.
