2010 MLB Draft Preivew, 6/19

Jason Churchill of espn.com has an update from the summer leagues with plenty of players who will be available in the 2010 MLB Draft.

New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)

  • Adam Matthews of South Carolina impressed an area scout.
  • Vanderbilt's best hitter, Aaron Westlake, will be playing for the Newport Gulls.
  • Kansas RHP TJ Walz had 88Ks in 82.1IP this season and will be playing in the NECBL.
  • Mitchell Beacom from UCLA will be playing for the Holyoke Blue Sox. "He's one of those, you know, projectable types," one AL club's West Coast area scout said. "Lots there to look for, and he's a lefty."
  • If I were playing in the NECBL, I'd be really bummed if I got stuck in Holyoke, MA vs. Newport, RI.

Texas Collegiate Baseball League (TCBL)

  • RHPs Willie Kempf from Baylor and Jeff Emens are prospects on scouts radars who will be playing in the TCBL this summer.

Cape Cod League

2009 MLB Draft: Notables From Rounds 4-17

Jason Churchill of espn.com highlights the notable selections from Rounds 4-17.  For a recap of the first round, click here.

  • Max Stassi slid all the way into Round 4, going to the Oakland As.  A few predictions had him going in the first round.  While this may be a steal for the As, he could be difficult to sign.
  • Another high school catcher, Luke Bailey, also went in Round 4 to Tampa.  This is another case where drafting a high schooler later could be challenging to sign him away from him collegiate commitment.
  • Jason Stoffel to the Giants, Keyvius Sampson to the Padres and Chris Dwyer to the Royals highlighted Round 4.
  • Minnesota grabbed second baseman Derek McCallum in the fifth round
  • Jeff Malm landed with the Rays, also in the fifth round.
  • Brooks Raley slipped to the Cubs in the sixth round.
  • The As drafted Ian Krol in the sixth round, but most expect him to go to the University of Arizona instead.
  • They also took a flyer on Sam Dyson in the 10th round.  Control remains a problem for Dyson, but he can throw in the mid-90s.
  • The Red Sox grabbed Madison Younginer and hope to sign him away from his commitment to Clemson.  The also added Kendal Volz who was great as a closer for Team USA in the olympics, but struggled this season.
  • Austin Wood, he of the 13-inning shutout performance vs. Boston College during Texas' 25-inning marathon win, went to the Tigers in the 5th round.

2009 MLB Draft Preview: Another Take On Winners and Losers At the NCAA Regionals

Earlier in the week, Jason Churchill of espn.com gave us his take on who helped and hurt their draft stock over the weekend in the NCAA regionals. Jonthan Mayo of mlb.com gave his own take. Mayo got a great comment from a scout about the weekend: someone was going to earn themselves a million dollars. That is, obviously, their performance will push their draft position high enough for a big signing bonus.

For guys like ASUs Mike Leake, UNC's Alex White and Dustin Ackley (though he doesn't need the help as he's likely the consensus #2 pick) and LSU's Jared Mitchell (a borderline first round pick to begin with) they get to continue to show off their wares in the Super Regionals. However, Boston College's Tony Sanchez (courtesy of the absurd, 25-inning marathon 3-2 loss to Texas), Rich Poythress of Georgia, Eric Arnett of Indiana and Kyle Gibson of Missouri have all finished their body of work for scouts to observe.

Winners

  • Mike Leake, RHP, ASU: A solid outing vs. Oral Roberts has him squarely in the Top 10 discussion.
  • Chris Dwyer, LHP, Clemson: His bizarre draft status - draft-eligible freshman - makes him very unique and challenging to fully evaluate. Nevertheless, he had a solid performance vs. Oklahoma State.
  • Andy Oliver, LHP, Oklahoma State: Oliver started the season ranked very highly (#7 according to Keith Law) but has struggled this season and really needed his good start vs. Clemson.
  • Rich Poythress, 1B, Georgia: 2HRs in the regionals was a heckuva finish to a solid season.

Losers

  • Alex White, RHP, UNC: He's struggled recently and the regionals were no exception. Fortunately, as mentioned earlier, he gets to pitch again.
  • Brooks Raley, Texas A&M: 2IP, 4R, 5H, 3BB, 2K
  • Alex Wilson, Texas A&M: 4IP, 5R, 8H, 3BB, 4K

Undecided

  • Kyle Gibson, RHP, Missouri: The outing was fine (8IP, 0R, 6H, BB, 8K) but his velocity (82-86mph) was suspect. Interestingly, Churchill was not concerned about Gibson's velocity and listed him as improving his draft stock.
  • Mike Minor, LHP, Vanderbilt: Allowed four runs in the first inning, but only one over the next seven.
  • Eric Arnett, RHP, Indiana: Mayo's input from scouts sums everything up: "One scout told me he really liked what he saw, that his team's defense didn't do him any favors and threw the ball really well. Another scout really didn't like what he saw and thought he's a reliever in the future."

2009 MLB Draft Preview, 6/1

Jason Churchill from espn.com has some updates from the NCAA regionals today. For a deeper look into his comments about the Boston College-Texas game, click here.

  • LSU outfielder Jared Mitchell had a nice weekend, improving his chances of being taken in the first round. He was a combined 4-for-7 over the weekend and sits at 333/478/569 for the season with a nice 50-58 BB-K ratio and 33 stolen bases.
  • Dustin Ackley from UNC continues to impress and this point I'd be very surprised if he's not the #2 pick. Ackley had three more hits - single, double and his 21st HR - and his numbers are now 417/520/781 for an absurd 1.301 OPS.
  • Chris Dwyer does not appear to be a first day prospect, but after a 8.2, 13K performance vs. Oklahoma State, the Clemson Tiger should figured into the third round of the draft.
  • His teammate, Ben Paulson, had two more hits, one of them a HR, and figures to be drafted on Day 1.
  • Billy Bullock had his second straight scoreless ninth inning, but he was not perfect this time, yielding two base runners. Bullock is still throwing in the mid-90s and touched 98 earlier in the year.
  • Caleb Cotham, from Vanderbilt, had a complete game, 8K, shutout 6-0 win over Louisville.
