Baseball Potpourri, 11/19: Astros, Burnett, Teixeira, Crisp

Let's take a spin around the league tonight:

Padres Rumors: Giles, Bell, Hensley

Let's take a quick spin through some Padres rumors at the end of their season.

Baseball Potpourri, 9/29: Fuentes, As, Delgado, Hampton

Let's take a spin around baseball in the post-mortem of many team's seasons:

  • The Rockies would like to make a run at closer Brian Fuentes this offseason but how much they'll be able to offer him will likely be dependent upon if they move Garret Atkins ($7.5M for 09) and Matt Holliday ($13.5M for 09). Fuentes is likely to recieve a $30M contract offer for three years.
  • The As are expected to make significant personel changes during the 2009 off season. Right off the bat it looks like Mark Ellis, Frank Thomas, Emil Brown and Keith Foulke will not be returning.
  • Based on his performance criteria, Carlos Delgado's 2009 option will be $12M.
  • Mike Hampton recently said that he'd consider pitching in Houston again. The more important question is if Houston would actually be interested.
  • Pirates general manager Neal Huntington told Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the Pirates expect to participate in the 2009 free agent pool.  They're looking to add a bat more than a pitcher.

Padres Rumors: Towers, Giles, Hoffman

Here is an interview that mlb.com's Barry Bloom conducted with Padres owner John Moores recently.  Let's take a look at some of the highlights.

  • Despite rumors that Moores was possibly going to sell the Padres because of his on-going divorce with his wife Becky, those rumors do not look to be true as Moores claimed he will maintain an active role with the team.
  • Kevin Towers and Sandy Alderson are expected back for 2009.  There had been recent rumors that Towers would interview for the Seattle job when it opens up.
  • The Padres are likely to exercise Brian Giles 2009 $9M option rather than pay his $3M buyout.
  • The team may be unable to make a long term commitment to Trevor Hoffman.  Hoffman recently met with Towers to discuss his future with the team.

Early Look At The 2009 Padres

Buster Olney of espn.com put together some thoughts on what the Padres will do this season to prepare for 2009.  The most notable move is that the team will likely pare its payroll from $74M in 2008 to $40M-$50M in 2009.  The most obvious move is that the Padres will decline Brian Giles $9M option for 2009.  This means that the Padres outfield for 2009 will be Jody Gerut, Chase Headley  and recent call-up Will Venable

Olney does believe, however, that the Padres will look to resign 41 year old closer Trevor Hoffman for 2009.  Hoffman made $7.5M in 2009 and if the Padres are going to lower their payroll, it is hard to imagine Hoffman would get a raise.

The Padres also just called up Wade LeBlanc and Matt Antonelli, two players expected to be with the team in 2009.  Paul DePodesta gives us his analysis of the recent call-ups.

Washburn, Ibanez Claimed

Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez were claimed off of waivers yesterday, though the claiming teams are not yet known. Information on waiver claims is not publically announced and there had been much speculation as to when Washburn could or would clear waivers. The deadline did appear to be yesterday at 1:30pm as the Mariners reportedly have until Thursday at 1:30pm to consumate a deal with the claiming teams.

The Yankees and White Sox are both thought not to be the claiming teams for Washburn. Ibanez could go to a number of teams including the Mets who had discussions with the Mariners before the non-waiver trade deadline and the Red Sox who claimed Brian Giles but had their transaction with the Padres fall apart due to Giles no-trade clause. Ibanez is only due the remainder of his $5.5M contract, estimated to be about $2M.

Giles Vetos Trade to Boston

After rampant speculation yesterday that Brian Giles could join the Red Sox after being claimed on waivers, Giles excercised his right to block a trade to Boston.  Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that the Red Sox will continue to monitor the wire for outfield protection.  Amalie Benjamin also of the Globe contends that the Red Sox were never optomistic that a deal would get done in the first place, regardless of Giles disposition.

Waiver Wire Candidates

Tracy Ringolsby provides her list of 10 players who will make it through the waiver wire. Whether it is because their skills have eroded or their contracts are too large for a team to take on, if any of these players clear waivers, the team is then free to trade them just as if it were prior to July 31st.

The players are: Rich Aurillia, Paul Byrd, Brian Giles (we now know he didn't make it through), Mike Hampton, Aubrey Huff, Juan Pierre, Edgar Renteria, Yorvitt Torrealba, Jarrod Washburn, and Randy Winn.

24 Hours Left for Red Sox to Complete Giles Claim

While the initial rumors yesterday were that the Red Sox claimed Brian Giles in order to block him from going to the Rays or Angels, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald writes today that Boston is serious about trying to acquire the Padres outfielder.  The main sticking points appear to be if Giles will waive his no-trade clause to Boston and if Giles will get enough playing time on a team with four outfielders already.
