Recently, a number of respected baseball media outlets have released their respective lists of the top number of prospects heading into the 2010 season.  These lists include Keith Law of espn.com's Top 100, Jonathan Mayo's collection of top prospects starting with Scouting the Sally's Top 30, Oriolesprospects.com Top 20, Propects Paradise's Top 30, Camden Crazies Top 25, Dave Barr's Hot Corner Top 20, Prospect Junkie's Top 20, The Cardinal Nation's Top 40, Seth Stohs from sethspeaks.net's Top 20, and Mayo's Top 50.

Obviously this all represents opinion, but to get a better idea of the overall feel of the group Baseball Rumor Mill averaged the Top 20 rankings from all of the lists to come up with an aggregate ranking of the Top 20 prospects heading into 2010. 

The rankings were tabulated only evaluating the Top 20 of each list and a point value was assigned to each rank.  #1 = 20 points, #2 = 19 points, so on down to #20 = 1 point.  If a player was not listed in the Top 20 a NR indication was given and no points were awarded.  The rankings are based on aggregate point totals, though we also did an evaluation of point totals after dropping the highest ranking and lowest ranking.  For instance, Desmond Jennings finished fifth overall in aggregate, but would be tied for 3rd with Buster Posey after dropping each player's highest and lowest ranking.

Not surprisingly, Jason Heyward and Stephen Strasburg were significantly ahead of the field at the #1 and #2 spot, respectively.  There seems to be a considerable drop in consensus after either Dustin Ackley at #12 or Madison Bumgarner at #13.  Only ten players received Top 20 votes in all ten rankings.

Less than a year after being the #1 draft pick, Strasburg rates as the #2 prospect in baseball

Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman has agreed to a five year contract with the Cincinnati Reds worth $30M acording to ESPN The Magazine's Jorge Arangure.  However, Chapman's representatives would not confirm the repots that Chapman has signed and merely listed the Reds as "possible".

While the Reds have presumably won the Chapman sweepstakes, earlier in the week the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays and Florida Marlins were all rumored to be bidding for the Cuban's services. 

Chapman is just 22 years old and comes armed with a fastball that exceeds 100 mph.  While control remains an issue for the left handed pitcher and most scouts acknowledge that Chapman is not ready to play in the major leagues his potentail remains off the charts.  One thing scouts really like his how smooth his delivery is something that is often a concern with a hard throwing pitcher.  Being able to repeat the same violent motion with minimal wear to the shoulder is always a point of emphasis and is something Chapman already displays.

Peter Gammons and Gordon Edes of espn.com give plenty of speculation about how the Red Sox off season will play out.

• Jason Bay is likely to return to the Red Sox for many reasons, but most of all, it's unclear who else will compete with the Red Sox to sign him.  Gammons feels the contract will be in the four years, $64M deal.  Bay recently rejected a four year, $60M-ish deal.  
• Alex Gonzalez seems likely to return to the Red sox, even though they declined his 2010 option.  Marco Scutaro is another option.
• Unless Adrian Gonzalez or Felix Hernandez are available to the Red Sox, a blockbuster trade is unlikely.  Nevertheless, the Red Sox are sure to explore the option of acquiring Roy Halladay again.
• The Red Sox were interested in Cody Ross back in July and may continue to try to acquire the outfielder from the Marlins.  Manny Delcarmen was the rumored compensation for Cody back in July.
• Rich Harden and Ben Sheets are likely free agent targets for the Red Sox.
• While Boston may be a good fit for Aroldis Chapman, neither writer thinks that the Red Sox will make a serious push for him.

Pitcher Tim Hudson is close to signing a three-year contract extension with the Braves.  The contract would prevent the veteran right hander from getting to free agency which starts 15 days after the conclusion of the World Series. 

The deal is reportedly worth $27M over three years, or an average of $9M per season.  Hudson's previous deal was $47M from 2006 to 2009 with a $12M club option and a $1M buyout for 2010.  The contract extension would nullify the option.

Hudson only made seven starts during the 2009 season after coming back from elbow surgery.  The 148 game winner went 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA in those starts.

Other big name free agent starting pitchers left on the market include Aroldis Chapman and John Lackey.
